Member Support
Elected members play a key role in setting the priorities of their Council, and Cycling England offers support to members who are keen to encourage their local authority in promoting more cycling.
Cycling England is encouraging local authorities to agree the appointment of a Member Champion for Cycling. At the end of February Phillip Darnton, Chairman of Cycling England, wrote to all local highway authorities in England inviting them to formally designate a Member for this role.
The Invitation to Local Authorities highlights the wide range of benefits for councils, including access to a funded package of support measures from Cycling England for designated Member Champions. It also includes advice on how to take this initiative forward and some guidance on what the role might involve.
The support package will be further developed over the coming months as the number of Member Champions increases, and in response to feedback from those participating.

Email Group for Elected Members
Cycling England is also keen to offer some support to elected members who act as cycling champions in their local authorities without necessarily having any formal designation in that role.
To initiate this, in 2007 Cycling England set up an email discussion group Cycling-Champions for local authority elected members who fulfil a role of cycling champion (whether officially or informally) in their authority.
