York

York was successful in its bid for Cycle Town/City funding in June 2008.

£3.68m of government funds, which will be match-funded, has been made available to improve cycling facilities in the city and get more people cycling.

The project is due to be officially launched soon.

An online consultation is currently underway to find out residents’ views on cycling, why people may choose not to cycle and how we can encourage more people to get on their bikes.

Overall, our main aims for the two and a half year Cycling City project are:

  • To increase total cycling activity (getting more people cycling more often)
  • To increase cycling amongst low participant groups (eg women, children, over 45s etc)
  • To improve the continuity of the cycle network
  • To improve safety and security for cyclists
  • To increase bike availability
  • To improve information for cyclists and raise awareness of the many benefits of cycling
  • To share best practice with other authorities in the country
