Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury has more people cycling than the national average, a beautiful and very popular riverside traffic-free route, some fairly flat terrain and a lot of people who make short journeys to work or to school.
These are some of the reasons that make it a good choice as a cycling town.
The aim is to double overall levels of cycling in the town by 2011, through:
- improvements to the cycle network;
- more cycle training for adults and children, including Bikeability Level 3;
- programmes to help more people to cycle to schools and workplaces;
- promoting leisure cycling;
- providing advice on practical issues such as buying a bike, maintaining it, and choosing a route;
Two part-time Project Managers have been appointed; Alison Kennedy is responsible for infrastructure improvements and Emma Bullard for promotions. They will be joined by Neal Challinor, the full-time Workplace Promotions Officer.
The cycling town initiative has support from a wide range of individuals and organisations including Shropshire County PCT, West Mercia, police and the local train company.
Shrewsbury Town Football Club organised a ride at half term to show their support and how easy it is to get to their new stadium by bike; the manager, players and mascot all took part and clearly had a good time.
Shrewsbury will also benefit from the Sustrans Connect2 lottery win which will help to fund major infrastructure improvements in the town centre, completing the traffic-free riverside path through the town.
